"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark." -Stephen Hawking
"Our universe didn't need any divine help to burst into being... What was God doing before the divine creation? Was he preparing hell for people who asked such questions?" - Stephen Hawking
"God not only plays dice. He sometimes throws the dice where they cannot be seen." -Stephen Hawking
"We should seek the greatest value of our action." -Stephen Hawking (in answer to a question on how we should live)

These are the words of famed cosmologist Stephen Hawking on God... and he certainly is not the last word on the subject of religion or God, or even the universe. The last book I read of his was, "The Universe in a Nutshell." The thing that struck me most was, that for a man who professes to "believe" in Science, he has more faith than I do. He has faith in the power of his own mind, though his body has so apparently failed him. And, this is strange, in my opinion, seeing his take on the power of the brain, and that he expects it's power to terminate at death. He envisions our mind as the product of a supercomputer, that was not intelligently designed, and morphed into being on its own. He believes in spontaneous generation of life... of universes... of the cosmos. Yet, he does not believe in a resurrection, a higher power, a supreme being, or a different state of existence for mankind. He only believes in what his fragile mind can conceive, as if the human mind isn't as prone to failure as the rest of the body. And, as if the brain is not a part of the body. Clearly, this is flawed reasoning, as his brain is his god. "I see Earth! It is so beautiful!" These were the words of the first man in space... Yuri Gagarin. The 12th of April was Yuri's Night, the anniversary of Yuri's famous Sputnik capsule spin around our planet. Though his flight would have international implications, and propel the U.S. organization to push their plans for the Moon landing up, now Yuri's Night is celebrated around the world each year. Star Parties, and what have you. Here is a remake of an old video I've shown before, which I see has been removed since I blogged about this a year ago. The music is different, but it appears to be the same video image colorized. (I liked the original better :)
But, imagine what the first men to view Earth from the planet would have seen, on foot. Imagine you are the first man, Adam, and walking around the Earth for the very first time. I can just hear Adam's words, with God walking beside him. "Adamah, it's so beautiful God!" For, Adam was named after the Earth since he came from the ground, much like naming a boy Clay now. Now, imagine when we walk our eternal homeland. Heaven will be a paradise unimagined heretofore. Past limitations will have no meaning there. The solar system will not be an unknown. No longer will mankind suffer and war. We will all be at peace. I know others have sung a song they titled "Imagine." But, just imagine with me that there is a God, and all the people are waiting to meet their Maker. Imagine we see the Light of God in all His splendor, and all the atheistic, agnostic fears are dispelled finally and God is revealed to man. What will be your words?
And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are your ways, you King of saints. Who shall not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name? for you only are holy: for all nations shall come and worship before you; for your judgments are made manifest. Revelation 15:3-4
But, more than imagining the removal of earthly limitations, and the beauty of heaven; imagine living a life that is for someone else, rather than for the greatest value for ourselves while here on Earth. What if I spend my "threescore and ten," minus the fourteen years before I met Jesus, entirely for God? What if I give myself to His service and glory, and become a vessel of His praise? Is that of value to anyone here on Earth? That is determined by what happens in those minutes after the components of our brain stop working, as referred to by Stephen Hawking. If there was nothing before Creation, and there is nothing after death, then I've lived my life for an idea... a thought, which is exactly what Stephen is doing at 71 years of age. He is living for the thoughts of his own ideology. No more...no less. Same/same. But, if God is and was, if He will be and awaits me; then I will have lived for so much more than I could ever be within the limits of my own imaginings. I will have lived for the glory of the magnificent Creator of all that Stephen worships. If Stephen is right, then our brain is no better than a stick, since it will fall into the earth and rot... and the remains will lay motionless for hundreds of years like a rock. This makes his trust of the human brain as ultimately evolved as ancient man who worshiped stone statues. I may as well worship my big toe, without which I could not walk. If I did, then my God would be dead if I could no longer walk. Likewise, since Science can not be comprehended by late stage Alzheimer patients, then their brain can not be a god; else it would be a dying god. If Stephen is right, then he very soon will be dead, as is the fate of all of mankind. Then what will it matter if we understand anything at all? How is it for the most value to know anything, if we all die and go to the grave in the end? Why care where the Earth came from, or where it is going...unless, of course, somewhere out there, there will be a meeting with eternity?
Does it sometimes feel as if it would kill you to forgive? No, we never feel that way. Or at least I don't. Most of the time, we just feel as if it would be so unjust to forgive an offense against us, or our loved ones. We think of it in terms of justice, as if holding the grudge is a punishment held against the offender, and they deserve it. In reality, the grudge is a malfunction of our own hearts... a mechanical breakdown... a fear of loving. The human heart was never made to hold a grudge. We were made to love and praise God. Nothing in the original Creation was made to frustrate or upset man. He was given all his heart could desire, yet something in his heart misfired... at a mere suggestion made by a serpent. After the Fall of Adam & Eve, man began to feel the emotion of unforgiveness. But, this mechanical breakdown of the heart can be remedied. After I explain, I will share with you 7 ways to forgive your brother.
Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23
HEART from the Hebrew: לֵב leb #3820 a form of 3824; the heart; also used (figuratively) very widely for the feelings, the will and even the intellect; likewise for the centre of anything:—+ care for, comfortably, consent, X considered, courag(-eous), friend(-ly), ((broken-), (hard-), (merry-), (stiff-), (stout-), double) heart((-ed)), X heed, X I, kindly, midst, mind(-ed), X regard((-ed)), X themselves, X unawares, understanding, X well, willingly, wisdom.
There is more on the landscape of the human mind than the physical geography of the brain.
Our thought processes are so much more than the wheels, cogs and gears of a clock.
Today, as well as in Bible, the words "feelings" and "thoughts" are used interchangeably as functions of both the mind and heart. The fact is, the human brain is a fluid thing, and is affected by the things we see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. Our life experiences alter us and shape us, as an ongoing process. The heart itself is assigned functions of emotions by many. The brain is seen as the "thinker." But, realistically, the thinking brain has a filtering system of values that we use to make cognitive decisions on every topic. There is, after all, a reason most men like bacon. Why do men like bacon? Think about that for a moment. The brain does not just think rationally without input from emotions. And, where do your emotions come from? They are partly influenced by hormones secreted from glands, which have nothing to do with the brain or logical thought. Yet, no one could deny that emotions influence our decisions. Look back at the bacon question. A strip of bacon has very little actual meat. Bacon is a huge percentage fat, and will not provide the protein that would fill us up. Compare a slice of bacon, or two, or three, to a ribeye steak. There really is no comparison, is there? Which one is more filling? Yet, you do not see the media craze for steak that you do for bacon. Bacon is portrayed as meat for a hearty appetite. This is illogical, to say the least. I would choose steak over bacon any day, logically! Yet, many value bacon. Their mental value filters tell them to think of the bacon as good. The heart functions mechanically by a series of valves that circulate blood; which issues life throughout the body, (if we don't eat too much bacon.) The brain functions mechanically in a similar way; in that neurons fire off electrical impulses, which travel along synapses through the nervous system of the body. This dual fluid and charge system makes up our life force. Blood and neuronal impulses are constantly regenerated throughout the body. What the heart and brain receive, they have already sent out. They get nothing they haven't already given. What they give, they will get in return. Likewise, when dealing with sociological concerns like mercy and forgiveness, we can not physically receive what we do not give. If we criticize those around us, we will "feel" condemnation in return.
Judge not, and you shall not be judged: condemn not, and you shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven: Luke 6:37
Though the mind seems like a highly specialized robot, with intelligent programming, the human mind is said to have a will: the power to choose and change outcome and output. This is so unlike a droid or robot. Have you ever met someone who seems to be on an emotional roller coaster? Every time you speak to them, they are either screaming in excitement, or howling in tears about their next big problem. They seem to be functioning like a robot, without power to choose or change their output. And, they seem to get stuck on the same recordings, like the robot on Lost in Space."Danger, Will Robinson! Danger, Will Robinson!" Emotions are operating states of mind. Since we are endowed with will, which is the power to choose and change; we are able to choose and change our emotions.
Will itself will not change our emotions, but rather will gives us the power to change our emotions. Changes in emotion are made by changing our actions and thoughts. Thoughts are themselves exchangeable by changing actions. Therefore, most emotions are exchangeable by changing our mode of action. Likewise, we can choose as a matter of will to forgive others. That is usually the way it is done, since God does not rescind our human will, and coerce forgiveness. There are many good ways to help yourself forgive someone, short of dying on a cross. Below are 7 ways I have tried myself, and they always seem to work for me. If you find them useful, feel free to drop me a note to let me know.
How do I forgive you? Let me count the ways: (Or, 7 Ways to Forgive your Brother!)
#1: Forgive Vicariously! If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then you have received forgiveness by being washed, metaphorically, in the blood of the cross. What this means, is that since Jesus died in your place, the blood He shed was an act that covers your sins. If you have received this forgiveness, then you have already directly been exposed to forgiveness, first hand. He has basically given us a figurative "blood transfusion;" replacing the unforgiveness and evil nature inside of man with His own goodness, through the cleansing power of the blood. This forgiveness for our sins killed Jesus. It may kill you, figuratively to forgive some offenses. But, you have an example. You can forgive those who offend you vicariously, that is through the actions of someone else, Jesus Christ.
#2: Forgive as an Example! If someone is always being critical of you, try forgiving them for a mistake they make. If you can't find something to forgive them for, forgive someone else in their presence. Criticism is a physical problem that can be remedied by repeated exposure to forgiveness. Seeing examples of forgiveness cures a condemning spirit. Choosing to forgive others is a way that we can demonstrate the power and forgiveness of Jesus to the world.
#3: Forgive in Proxy! If you no longer have contact with the person who has hurt you, because of death or distance, choose a person who has the same problems or vices that the offender had, and forgive them. Remember, forgive is a verb -an action word. Physically doing something for this person to help them with a problem their vice has caused will result in an internal release of forgiveness. For example, if a parent was an alcoholic, and caused you anguish throughout your life, but they are no longer living for you to practice the action of forgiving, help someone with a drinking problem, or volunteer at a rehab clinic. Actively helping someone stop an offense that has hurt you in the past, will allow them to receive your forgiveness as a stand-in. You benefit by releasing forgiveness out of your own heart for the person who is gone, into the life of another person who will live better because of your gift of forgiveness.
#4: Forgive in Increments! If what someone has done hurt you too deeply and traumatically for forgiveness, then choose a small part of their mistake to forgive for starters. By chipping away the unforgivable bit by bit, you will find you have no grudges left. Bitterness drains your heart's reserves. Forgiveness gives you power.
#5: Forgive early; Forgive often! Forgiveness is accumulative. Practice forgiveness by forgiving "little crimes." Repeat as often as necessary, until you find your heart is overflowing with forgiveness. The most difficult time to forgive is when we are "running on empty" and feeling like we are drained. Store up forgiveness, because you never know when the hard years will come, and you may have to hurt for awhile. When that happens, you will be thankful that your heart is full of forgiveness, and you find it easy to release the pain into forgiving someone else, because you have been learning to forgive all along.
#6: Forgive Yourself! Offenses hurt the offender, too. Sometimes you were punished for those things you did wrong, and that hurt. So, you need to forgive yourself for hurting yourself like that. Spend one week listing everything you've done in your life that was wrong, mean, or painful for anyone else. It will take at least a week, because we often block our own offenses out of our memory. Write it down even if you weren't caught, because you suffered mentally, and emotionally in some way for having done it: guilt, shame, bad dreams, fear of discovery. You can keep a running list in a note-taking app like Evernote. After 7 days, mark the offenses off your list one at a time as you tell yourself you are forgiven. This may sound like faulty logic for a moment, unless you realize, you really are being forgiven, because you are forgiven by yourself. You may not be forgiven by the person you wronged, but you forgive yourself.
#7: Forgive like Jesus! The mercy you get is the mercy you give from your own heart. It works like the circulatory sstem I mentioned at the beginning. Forgiveness pumped out; forgiveness pumped in! Bitterness out; bitterness in! Mercy out; mercy in! This flow chart assures us that we get what we give. Jesus forgave us of all the sins and offenses we have ever committed. If you are yet unforgiven, you can repent, or turn from your sins right this very moment, and be converted to the Gospel of Jesus. Jesus is the ultimate forgiver. He gives, and He forgives, and He keeps on giving. His heart works! If we close our hearts up, and refuse to allow mercy and forgiveness to flow through us, then we will be unable to receive forgiveness ourselves. If we are already forgiven, then the same forgiveness that flows into our heart, can flow out of our hearts by an act of will, just as Jesus willed Himself to forgive on the cross. Remember, the mercy you get is the mercy you give from your own heart. Choose to forgive! Forgive like Jesus!

As the new moon turns into a waxing crescent, tonight at approximately 45 minutes after sunset, we will witness a unique apparition in the skies! I do believe we will still have a wet moon, but either way, at Twilight, the moon will be close to the horizon. If it is a wet moon, as pictured below, the horns will still be pointing away from the horizon, like a bowl, which is mostly a visual effect of the Winter months. (Some call the wet moon a Cheshire moon, because it looks like the Cheshire cat's smile, as in Alice in Wonderland). When it returns gradually to its vertical position, it appears to be pouring out the the water it contains in the Spring rains, so it is often referred to as a dry moon. Because of Daylight Savings Time, sunset will occur at 7:46 pm here in my neck of the woods. You can use your zip code in the application at http://www.sunrisesunset.com/ The comet has been in the vicinity of the southern Hemisphere for about 2 weeks now, but was not visible here until today because it was aligned with the sun. Since it is further from the sun now here, we will be able to see it just after the sun descends, approximately around 8:31 pm here, or maybe even a little earlier because of the mountains on my western horizon. It is now or never, as this comet won't be back. It is a once in a lifetime view for Comet PanSTARRS. And, I have a front row seat to see this remarkable creation!
Genesis 1:14-19 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

As can be seen in the image at left, the comet will be visible until about March 20th, depending on weather. (Click to enlarge.)
Recommended Camera Setting: Use a long or zoomed-out lens, and put your camera on a tripod because with a long lens in twilight, exposures won't be short. Experiment with a variety of exposures.
Binoculars would be helpful, as it won't seem as bright for a few days.
Social Media has its limits. But, the advantages make it well worth the struggle to communicate. You see, communication is the highest order of existence for mankind. We strive to communicate our needs, our affection, our thoughts, our plans, our hopes and dreams, and often we just communicate for the sake of communication... companionship. Being a somewhat shy person face-to-face, it often falls my lot to meet many of my communication needs through writing, through web design, and through social media. Twitter is an excellent geography! I like to go there almost every day. The 140 character limit for each tweet forces you into a sort of train ride experience when trying to hold a conversation, and I am slow of speech, (even slower in person often.) Usually several boxcars hurtle past before I have a chance to hop on board. This means that I sometimes struggle to do an impromptu question justice, especially if unfocused. The following "Conversation with an Atheist" story is compiled from one such Twitter interaction where I feel I fell off the train somewhere, and still don't know where I missed a step. "Occult Think Tank" was presenting some very good questions, I think, though he became quite angry at some point. When I realized he was angered by my return questions, I stated such and broke off the 'convo', knowing we would get nowhere with that line of emotion, as you can see. Such "antisocial" arguing would only defeat my purpose for being on Social Media to start with. I believe there are a total of 36 cars on this train, mine and his, so be sure to click the READ NEXT PAGE button at the bottom, if it shows up and only the first 24 are showing.
I can see several of the classic questions athiests have about religion in general and God specifically here in this conversation. Even though OTT was hurling insults in the end, I believe that many of his questions were sincere. To name the questions as I see them, there was one nontraditional question I hadn't expected: 1. Why should a God care about individual humans (or me,) since He is so big? And a few traditional questions I've heard before: 2. If God is real, why does He allow children to starve? 3. Do you personally care about the lives of inchworms or ants? Do they pray to you? Do you get [angry] over their behavior? 4. If God is not in our dimension, then how could He possibly exist? 5. What if Christians are wrong about their pompous ideas of God and what if God sees their belief in His concern over their lives as pompous pride, which He despises? Since I did such a bad job of communicating within the 140 character limit, I think I should be given a do-over. So, allow me to speak directly to @OccultThinkTank I heard you and I wasn't ignoring your very good questions OTT. My answer was presented in the form of 2 questions: 1. How is it that you exist, in the presence of starving children? 2. Does the fact that I can't see someone negate their existence? I know that I have a habit of answering a question with a question, which annoys some people. It really is a habit because I was an elementary school teacher before I retired, and it is not meant to sound so condescending. It was just the way I answered questions for so many years to children. So, it became a part of my habits, even with adults, and probably this is not a good thing about me. I apologize if it offended you. To elaborate, when you say that the fact of starving children proves God does not exist, you are saying one existence proves another's non-existence. That is as illogical as me saying that because starving children exist, then Occult Think Tank must not be real. You can't use one existing phenomenon to deny the existence of another. The question of "Why do children go hungry?" is both a philosophical argument and a question of morality. While I agree wholeheartedly that the existence of world hunger shames the human race, I deny that it shames God, their Father. We as humans residing on Earth with these hungry children are the ones with the most "power" to do something about the problem of human hunger. We shouldn't expect God to do our work for us. We should and can expect God to do the work that we can't do. If I see my neighbor starving and send God to feed him, then as you said I am being pompous and using God as a pet, in addition to neglecting my human duty to my neighbor. But, it doesn't disprove the existence of God. It just makes us seem invisible as humans who do nothing. Often children go hungry while they have earthly Fathers and Mothers, or grandparents who could feed them. For example, if a man fathers a child unwed, and the mother doesn't tell him he is a father, and in her state of emotional upheaval wanders around uncared for and is unable to feed the child, then the child will be hungry. Or, if the mother tells the man he is going to be a father, and he abandons her, and she can't feed the child, then the child will be hungry. But, that doesn't prove that the father doesn't exist in either case. The father does exist. The only question here would be 'Does the father care about his child?' Whether he cares for the child or not won't matter if he is not given a say in the matter. The mother can even choose to have an abortion without his consent today. To me that is sad in the case of men who would gladly raise a child, but are denied the life of their own flesh and blood. And, here is the parallel I was trying to draw, that God is our Father, and He gives us free will to choose our own lives. If we choose to allow our children to starve, we made that decision ourselves, not God. God was taken out of the matter by the separation of church and state. Do you want Him to overrule the governments now, who allow their citizens to starve? To explain my second point, the fact that you can't see God does no more to disprove His existence than the fact that I can't see you prove your non-existence. I do believe you exist OTT. I certainly know that because, as you pointed out, I interact with you. We communicate. I was trying to draw the parallel there when I asked if the fact I can't see you means you don't exist. God does interact with us. I know this because He speaks to me in prayer, and I speak to Him. He also has worked for me, saving me miraculously from many situations that I could have never saved myself. And, I believe that because I accept His love for me, and because I believe in Him and His death on the cross, this makes me His child. I receive Him as my Father. Because I am His, when this world ends, I will have eternal life after death. My Soul will live with Him in glory. We all are living souls, and souls are eternal. You are more than flesh and body. You have a Soul and Spirit that are invisible to the human body. Just look at a dead body and you will see that something is missing... the spirit and soul have left the body. Just because you didn't see them doesn't mean they don't exist. Just because I can't see you doesn't mean you don't exist and have feelings. But, what about the question of why God cares for the human race? As I stated on Twitter, God is an omniscient Spirit who both formed & desires communion with the mind of man. This is the part that is the most shocking to you and to many Christians. God not only created us, but He created us to communicate with us on an interpersonal level. He wants our love and praise, just as much as you or I want each other's friendship. He is not only in some far away dimension where we can not interact with Him, but He is here in the affairs of man. He sees the things that we do to each other, and He cares. We will all one day answer to God for the way we have treated our brother. Perhaps you don't believe at all in God's personal communication and interaction with mankind. I recognize your disbelief, but I also recognize the existence of the spiritual world. In regards to the ants and inchworms, yes they intrigue me. I kept ant farms in the classroom, and ordered mealworms when I taught Science/ Biology, along with many other critters. But, the only one that ever spoke to me was one of my cockatiels. Amos would whistle and call "pretty girl." I was not sure he was referring to me :) But, he knew those words when he was given to me and I had no luck trying to un-train these catcalls from his speech, nor with teaching him any other vocabulary. Now for the last question. What if Christians are wrong in their belief of God, and god is real, but not in the way that they expect? That is my favorite of all your questions OTT, because it points out the importance of communicating with God. You can go to church all you want, and listen to all the sermons you want. You may read hundreds of books, and even wordy blogs like mine, but in the end the ideas they give you may be all wrong about God. How will you know? Allow me to here answer your question with a reminder for Christians. You will only know a God you have interacted with personally yourself. In the end, will God know you? Matthew 7:20-23 Therefore by their fruits you shall know them. Not every one that says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out demons? and in your name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.
****Note: There is so much to say that I have to resist the urge to fire off multiple blogs. I realize I am early today, but this is what happens when I take a week off, as I did this past week. I already had Hootsuite loaded up with a stack of re-runs through Saturday night, which left me straining at the bit with several ideas before the re-runs ran out. No harm done, though since I will be home late from Travis' classes tonight.
The deaf make a joke, where the sign for standing is displayed (2 fingers pointing down or standing on the other hand, which is palm up.) Then they flip the palm facing downward, and hold the two fingers upside down under the palm and call it understand. Of course, this is not the correct sign for understand, but it presents a funny picture of someone standing under, literally. We use the word supernatural to describe something beyond our understanding of the laws of the natural world. But, we have to keep in mind, our understanding is just that... our understanding. We stand under the omniscient God of the universe, the Master Creator and Designer of all that we see and more. Wisdom has been defined as “the perception of the best end and the best means.” I would also define it as the ability to apply knowledge profitably and sensibly. 1 Corinthians 1:22-24 says, “For the Jews require a sign and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jew and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” This stands out to me because what the world seeks, they find the least of. Yet, what believers find, whether they knew it or not, they needed most. Even today, people still seek wisdom and the power of signs. God gives by revelation and by inspiration. Our knowledge of Him does not come from Scientifically searching for Him, but rather from God’s divine self-disclosure to us. This passage is ironic, in that we see those looking for a sign, and they trip over the sign. Meanwhile, we see those looking for wisdom, and they are foolishly discounting the wisdom of the Almighty. That which is supernatural is beyond the natural; outside the natural. It really would be foolish to discount everything outside the natural world simply because you can't see it, much like discounting the existence of planets that contain water beyond our solar system. We can't see them. But, the fact that we stand below this knowledge does not make us ignorant. Only discounting that as impossible would make us truly ignorant. Knowing the limitations of your own mind is true wisdom.
Sitting in the silence of the night, what is it that compels me to the silence of the night? So much is to be heard in the darkness that surrounds my house. The bubbling of the fishtank, the spinning blades of the ceiling fan, the sound of my hubby's steady breathing beside me; these seem to call out to the reveries of old memories. Why is it that every silent night is connected to the hundreds of silent nights that slipped by before it? I believe it's the soulness of it. I believe that in the silence of every night, we feel the reality of God thick around us. I can't believe there are anymore atheists in the silent darkness of a waking pillow. Unbelievers are lost, stumbling around in the God-field of dreams; waking dreams. Yes, we all think about God in the dark. He is often the last light in our conscious thoughts as we drift off to sleep. And, He is the last thought that passes through our minds before we die. You say you don't believe in God? Then what are you thinking about right now? And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what you shall put on. The life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them: how much more are you better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If you then be not able to do that thing which is least, why are you anxious concerning the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith? Luke 12:22-28

A camel on the beach in Africa is a common sight at low tide. Even more common is the sight of thousands of crabs crawling the beach as the tide turns just after high tide and is ebbing. This is a beautiful view, in the moonlight, as you can still see well as you walk along the beach, amidst the cacophony of the waves crashing around you and the glimmer of the starlight all around.
These guys are showing off their camel and offering rides for shillings at low tide. Here in America, progress has provided many ways to make a living, far in advance of "third-world countries." Yet, our first-world pains seem to be greater than theirs. I noticed years ago, working in the city near Atlanta, progress can be hard to differentiate from decay. Sometimes it's difficult to decide whether the city around you is growing or dying. One of the signs of decay that I noticed was the reliance on "designer drugs." No, I'm not talking about street drugs, or recreational drugs, as they are known, or even the drugs prescribed for medical sickness, but prescribed drugs that people take when they are not sick, for mood or performance enhancing effects.
This was common in the city. I was surprised to learn how common. I won't label names of drugs, because it doesn't really matter what you name your personality or your sex-life, if it comes out of a bottle. Also, I don't really know many of the names, since I am not an expert on drugs. I know only enough to know that doctors lie when they tell you there are "absolutely no side effects" to any drug. Every drug has some side effect or other. This is why I don't like taking any type of drug at all. And, this is why I have kept my neurologist for this long, despite the fact that I dislike him greatly (and I am now getting a second opinion nearer to home.) Number one, he doesn't push pain pills on me, and he agreed to my stance against taking drugs for pain, and gave me a tens unit to help with pain naturally without the use of drugs, Number two, he told me that the drug my urologist has me on does indeed have side effects, despite repeated assurances from my urologist that it doesn't. I refer to this pill, which is the only one I take, as my "pill to take a p--- with," since it makes it possible for me to use the bathroom without self-cathing. (That's supposed to be a funny twist on an old expression that says some folks won't give you p--- to take a pill with," which my doctor did give me in my case, just in reverse.) Supposedly, it has no ill effects, but I am on a large dose, which combined with the effects of the pacemaker for my bladder, makes it possible for me to live a near-normal life. Not only do some doctors lie, but those who lie often don't care about the safety of drugs. For example, when I woke up from my first surgery, my doctors in Calhoun, Dr. Stephanie J. Brogden and Dr. William L. Theus, had me on morphine. This was to keep me drugged enough to not fully understand all they had done to injure me. They withheld information from me about my injury and my treatment. But, I had the nurses take the morphine out almost immediately, telling them I didn't need morphine and it was causing nightmares and hallucinations, as my visitors can attest. My boss came in after one of the surgeries when I was talking a nurse into getting it taken out for me. Then they sent me home on Darvocet for pain. They gave me several bottles between the two of them, most of which sat in my medicine cabinet, until it ended up in the garbage later, when I discovered it had been finally pulled off the shelf for causing heart attack and irregular heartbeat. These Calhoun doctors had given it to me during the time that many doctors no longer prescribed it, while it was under investigation by the FDA. I'm sure they had their own reasons. 8/ Am I telling you that you can't trust doctors? I'm telling you that if you rely on anyone else's prescription without your own conscious investigation, you will get more than you can read in the prescription scribbling. My doctors are, for the most part, natural method advocates, and vegetarians, who push organic grocery lists on me with the fanaticism of a street-junkie. I noticed too, that the ER physician's assistant at Tanner Hospital here in Haralson County supported my decision when I turned down the prescription for pain medicine when I tore the ligament in my hand. And, the orthopedic doctor in Carrollton didn't even offer me drugs when he reset my finger. So, no, I am not against doctors, just against being stupid sheep following the wrong shepherds. And, I am not against taking medicine advisedly. I grant you, there are days like this week, when I am in so much pain I can't think clearly. But, even then, I am me. I'm not some drug I took out of a bottle. But, then again, that has always been me. My life has changed so drastically over the past two years that I often find myself searching for the strands that are really me from the different lives that I have led. Am I evolving or am I ebbing, like the tide. When I look at the common elements in my life, the natural world-loving, the fascination with technology, the writing, the refusal to smoke and take drugs from childhood, the search for God, I find that I am only intensifying in those elements that really define who I am. Everything else is temporal and situational. And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Colossians 2:6-10 (NLT) (Click the reference link for the NKJV) Which brings me back around to the question of evolution in the macro... do I believe society is evolving? No, I believe society is becoming more of what it has always been. Crime is intensifying, economic problems are intensifying, and social problems are intensifying. Darwin taught about the "Evolution of Species" as a method of "survival of the fittest." I have to wonder how he could call this evolution. When evolution has played its way out as a theory, what will men believe?
*Today, I am posting early, as I have had several appointments this week, and resume physical therapy this afternoon. I got home from Atlanta too late last night, and I hope to make Bible Study tonight. So, this is it till tomorrow night. Adieu! No, not adieu, because I will be back lol. That should be Au revoir! Until later!
As human as we all are, we care about matters of clout, influence, and rankings. Willard Van Orman Quine (1908 - 2000) was an American philosopher and mathematician. He was affiliated with Harvard University, and published or revised several books. Quine could lecture in French, Spanish, Portuguese and German, as well as his native English. But, Quine had an Erdős number of 3. The Erdős number was created by friends as a humorous tribute to all of the papers written by Erdős, one of the most prolific modern writers of mathematical papers, and has become well known in scientific circles as a tongue-in-cheek measurement of mathematical prominence. This same idea of a measure of prominence has been carried over to other areas as well. In Physics, there is the Einstein number. In Chess there is the Paul Morphy number. In Linguistics, there is the Noam Chomsky Number. And, of course, in acting there is the Kevin Bacon Index. As a matter of fact, Bacon is the subject of the trivia game titled Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, based on the idea that, due to his prolific screen career covering a diverse range of genres, any Hollywood actor can be linked to another in a handful of steps based on their associations with Bacon. The name of the game is taken from the idea of six degrees of separation between any two people. (Bacon later formed the charitable initiative SixDegrees.org, a social networking site intended to link people and charities to each other.) The Oracle Of Bacon gives the mathematical Index number for any star, in terms of their working relationship with Kevin Bacon.
My favorite actress has a Bacon Index of 1, which is what makes the thing so comical, because she is by far the better actor. Meryl Streep co-starred with him in River Wild. But, box office tough guy Bruce Willis has a Bacon index of 2, because he worked with Erik Estrada in Loaded Weapon 1. Erik Estrada has worked with Bacon in Who Married Margo, so he has a prestigious 1 rating. :)
The Bacon Index seems to be influential in matters of politics as well, as Ronald Reagan had a Bacon Index of 2. Note below, that while Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have Index numbers of Infinity, Newt Gingrich has a Bacon Index number of 2.
It may be noted that Kevin Bacon, just like Bertrand Russell, is on the List of Atheists in Wikipedia. Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was noted for saying "No one can sit at the bedside of a dying child and still believe in God." The fact that a person is an atheist is really about as useful in giving you information about a person as the fact that Sarah Palin and Jerry Lee Lewis are both on the List of Christians under the Assembly of God Denomination sub category. You can’t define a whole group of people usually by one person in that group. Yet, a group can often identify some of the motivations of a person. Or, in other words, the fact that Bacon is an atheist tells you much of nothing about atheists, but a lot about Kevin Bacon. And, I think this can be said to be true about a lot of things, in a way that is not stereotyping, though I grant that some may disagree with me. But, as the International Chess Master Harry Golombek once said about Savielly Tartakower, a Polish/French Chess Grandmaster, "Practically all chess-players are born optimists [...] Those who believe in God count on divine help; the agnostics know that somehow or other it will turn out all right; whilst the atheists, who are of course the most superstitious, believe in luck. If this last statement seems a trifle high pitched then let me submit as evidence the case of Dr. Tartakower. An atheist if ever there was one, he fervently believed in luck, touched wood at appropriate moments and never, never walked under ladders.” As, human beings, we are influenced by other human beings. It can be noted that “birds of a feather flock together” for more reasons than genetics. Take the case of Alfred North Whitehead who said about the Bible, “The total absence of humor from the Bible is one of the most singular things in all literature.” Whitehead was not only an atheist but greatly influenced the doctoral thesis work of Bertrand Russell, mentioned earlier. But, the idea that the Bible is devoid of humor has to be taken by a person who is totally uninformed in its contents. I would have to disagree, as there is much to find as humorous in the Bible. I only briefly touched on the subject of humor in the Bible on my Kid’s Website subpage “Riddled With Humor,” because much of the humor in the Bible is not Sunday School type material. Regardless, of where you find yourself, in relation to the Chessmasters, the Actors, the Scientists, the Mathematicians, the Christians, the Agnostics, and the Atheists; you are within two degrees separation from God and Eternal Life. Either you know Him or you don’t. Nothing else matters in the grand scheme of eternity. It won’t matter if you worked with someone who knew Him, or if someone who knew Him prayed for you. All that matters is your relationship to God. Philippians 3:8-11 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but rubbish, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
_ Today is the first day of the rest of your eternal life. I hope your New Year is every bit as beautiful as the promise. Titus 1:2 In body I feel like I have worked in Showbiz... Showbiz Pizza that is, as one of those moles in the whack-a-mole games. You know...sledge hammer... Had a good service at church. I had the black-eyed peas in the slow cooker. Then after church, Travis set the table for me and made a pitcher of black tea for himself, while I cooked a pot of collard greens and the cornbread, macaroni, and baked potatoes, and simmered another pot of wassail. This all took about an hour, and by the time Larry and I had the food on the table and sat down for our New Years dinner, we realized Travis was sound asleep. Anybody who knows him, knows he sleeps like he is in a coma. He had not had any sleep, but had been up all night after the new year. So, Larry and I ate a dinner alone together. Though I missed Travis somewhat, our first time not having New Years dinner together, it felt kind of like a date eating alone with my husband :) I had no energy left for the dishes after all the cooking. It took a half hour to clear the table and pack up the leftovers with Larry's help. Then we had company over for a little while, and I have been comatose myself in my recliner ever since. Didn't even make it to the evening service with Larry. So, the dishes are piled in the sink, and the sun has disappeared from the sky. They will sleep in the sink tonight. Nobody ever died from having a sink full of dirty dishes. Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. We have just finished our first day of the year 2012, though we do it just the opposite of Jewish tradition with the evening being the first half of a day period, and the morning being the second half. Here in this verse in Genesis, the definition for a day is established for reference throughout the rest of the chapter. And, the words are repeated a total of six times (5, 8, 13, 19, 23, and 31.) But, at the end of this first day, God looks around at what He has done, and is the first to say that what He saw was good. (See verses 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31) Therefore, I am a plagiarist when I tell you that God's world is very good. I stole those words from the Creator Himself. But, if you are still reading after I have "fetched a compass" around the point, then I would like to point out some observations about the first and second days of eternity. God began with big plans. He started out on Day One of Eternity by turning on the light, so He could get to work. He had a universe in mind, and you and I in design stage, just like a young married couple trying to conceive their first child. They have a plan. They want a baby. They take steps to encourage that child into this world and their arms. They have big plans. They expect to need diapers, a crib, and many other things for this child. So, they both set to work making a place for this child in their world. "Daddy" did just that for us. He had big plans. He designed a world for us. At this point, the earth was created, a spinning ball of water, warbling through the universe. On Day Two, God created an outer atmosphere around the earth, by causing some of the water on the planet to evaporate into an outer band swaddling the earth. This swaddling band of oxygen was called heaven... our sky. Without that, our view would be that of black space, like on the moon. At some later point (the Flood) God would bring these waters from the outer layer into a world wide deluge, removing our protection from the sun's harsher rays, expanding the oceans around the continents, and shortening our average life span. But, at that moment in time, we had a layer of water in the outer atmosphere. And, that was the end of Day Two's work for God. Strikingly, to me, is the absence of God saying that it was good, as He did on each of the other days of Creation, (and twice on the third and sixth days.) I can't help but notice, while I picture our Father God creating a swaddling band around the planet for us, that He knew we would sin. He perceived ahead that we would fall. He was silent in this knowledge, no commentary. He had big plans, yet those plans included redemption from the fall. Now, when I planned my first child, I didn't plan the playground fights or the black eyes. I didn't plan the embarrassments or spilt milk. I certainly didn't plan the teenage rebellion and angry words. And, I thought I wanted to be a mother. What I wanted was to love a child. God would give me that opportunity to love. It included the challenges. Not our heavenly Father. He did the work of Day Two with the foreknowledge of a Fall, a Flood, a Crucifixion, a Resurrection, and a Second Advent. Acts 2:23 and Revelation 13:8. God knew the challenges of loving his children before He created them. And, He created us yet. Imagine that kind of love! Now that you've thought about Day One and Day Two of Eternity, think about the fact that today is Day One, not just of 2012, but of the Rest of Eternity. Make it an Eternity with God. Take hold of your promising future, my brother and sister in Creation. It is very good!
