Genesis Theories Quiz
Following are some theories of the beginning of life and the early history of Earth from Genesis. Match each theory with its description, as a beginning reference point for looking at Creation as it appears in the Biblical account. Answers appear at the bottom.
1. World-Wide Deluge
2. Age Dating Factors
3. Old Testament
4. Gap Theory
5. Big Bang Theory
7. Day Age Theory
8. Documentary Theory
A. _____The New Testament contains over 200 allusions to this document, indicating that the Apostles and Disciples, as well as the Pharisees, Saducees, Jewish leaders, and Jesus Himself accepted the validity of the document text.
B. _____This theory erroneously points to 2nd Peter 3:8. This is used to try to reconcile Scripture with evolution by conceding that each creative day may have actually been a thousand year era, making the earth old enough for evolution to have occured. This idea can be “debunked” with Scripture that says repeatedly that, “...the evening and the morning were the first day...(etc. Gen. 1.)”
C. _____This theory purports the development of intelligent Homo Sapiens from higher primates of the animal kingdom, which in turn developed from lower primates reptiles, fish, down to a single-celled organism. This single cell developed from a “soupy Sargasso Sea” that formed from gases that appeared from nothing. This line of reasoning is in direct contradiction to the laws of Science. Science shows that intelligent life comes from intelligent life. All creatures reproduce “after their own kind.”
D. _____This theory attempts to create doubt about God’s Handiwork of Scripture by purporting that different books of the Canon were not actually written by one author. These textual critics take passages of a book such as Isaiah and point to supposed differences in structural style as evidence that there were several “Isaiahs.” Words, sentences, and chapters are picked apart and assigned initials J, E, and P for different Scribes who collected and added to the book over the centuries. One item considered by scholars who hold this theory is the fact that Isaiah wrote about events that occured during and after the captivity, which occured AFTER his lifetime, and about which he could not have known. Of course, that’s what PROPHETS usually do, prophesy about the future. One problem reveals the absurdity of this theory. These “scholars” often can’t agree on which Scribe would have written first, J, E, or P. Of course, that destroys the time element as basis for their original argument.
E. _____This theory supposes that a colossal explosion hurled the planets into their orbits. We know now that not all the planets or their moons orbit in the same direction, which would defeat the idea of the planets spinning as a result of an explosion.
F. _____This event is a fact, based on Non-Biblical evidence (i.e. dating of oldest living things to this time, marine fossils found on crest of mountains, sudden extinction of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals.
G. _____This theory is supported by the fact that there are fossil records dating back billions of years, as well as human attempts at “carbon-dating” that indicate an aged terra, well beyond the age indicated by creation and the Genesis account. This, as well as the existence and extinction of the dinosaurs indicate an apparent conflict in dating. This theory contends that God created the earth fully mature, as he did Adam and Eve and the animals. Therefore the mature earth was created with fossils intact, sufficient to support plant life.
H. _____This theory is not supported by scripture, though Genesis 1:1-2 are used as a reference point for speculation that God created a perfect and complete universe. Between 1:1 and 1:2 Satan’s rebellion marred this perfect universe. From 1:2 on, God remolds this sin-marred creation.
