The funny pages were the best part of the papers, when we used to get them in paper format before they became digitized. These alternate reality characters living in parallel universes seemed to be a real part of my childhood, and they had big problems. Now, as an adult, I find myself thinking in captions, in various challenging circumstances.
"This looks like a job for Superman."
"We have our rage in all the wrong places."
"Bring around the Batmobile, Alfred.
What captions do your life situations bring to mind? Think about that when you are stuck in traffic or behind a slow driver on a backroad. Even Jesus' life seemed to take on the nuances of the funny pages at times. But, laughing in captions is always better than hearing the dramatic theme from Jaws in your head. And the outcome is always better in the funny pages.
This verse is striking in the comic irony, because the parents were not laughing, and neither was Jesus. But, the little child was brought back from the dead... to laugh and play in front of her scornful, doubting family and neighbors.
Remember, not all those who laugh get the joke.
