November 13, 1915 was a day historically during the First World War.... the Great War. And, it was not a great time to be living in France, or Europe for that matter. It was fine here in the states, because we did nothing... were doing nothing for the war a half a world away at that point, and wouldn't be doing anything at all for almost two more years of carnage and bloodshed. Yesterday's terrorist attacks in Paris left me thinking of the irony of the situation, with France playing Germany at the stadium there in Paris, and the attack coming from a supposed middle Eastern terrorist organization.
The events from both World Wars and from yesterday just remind me that history is a circle, and only the names and races are changed in the newspapers. It brings back words I often repeated in the classroom, "Can't we all just get along?" And, it makes me wonder if when we've fried all our skins an ashen gray from wars and rumors of war, if perhaps then the Great War of race and nations will cease and maybe we can all play football. Not a likely scene is it?
